The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Sedalia Park. The competition originated in Dekalb County and was created by Helen Ruffin, a media specialist, who served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award program. This literary award program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education. Ms. Ruffin wanted to promote the award selections among her students.
Today, the "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format. There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.
This is Sedalia Park’s 3rd year competing in the HRRB. Our team is sponsored by Ms. Holcombe, Ms. Taube and Ms. Kienker. Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team. We select the 'top ten' readers from our book club on the following criteria:
